More than nine months after the devastating earthquake that caused the total collapse of the Sky Villa Condo in Mandalay, owners of the construction firm remain in hiding, failing to provide accountability for the disaster that claimed over 200 lives.

The Worst Disaster in Mandalay’s History

The 11-story Sky Villa Condo, located near the Water Filtration Plant in Aungmyaythazan Township, collapsed during the earthquake on March 28 last year. The tragedy is recorded as one of the deadliest building failures in the region.

According to data released by the authorities after five months of rescue operations:

• Confirmed Deaths: 206 bodies recovered (including children).

• Survivors: Only 52 people were pulled from the rubble alive.

• Missing: Local residents estimate that many more remain missing, as guest lists indicated approximately 400 people were residing in the complex at the time of the quake.

NTL Construction Co. Ltd and Lack of Accountability

The condo was developed by NTL Construction Co. Ltd. Despite the massive loss of life and property, apartment owners and victims' families report that the company has failed to meet with them or provide a clear plan for compensation.

While the company reportedly provided a "compassion grant" of 10 million Kyats (100 Lakhs) per deceased victim to 148 families in September, many families have refused to accept the money. They are demanding a face-to-face meeting with the owners to discuss long-term accountability and the structural failures of the building.

"The owners have said nothing. They haven't contacted us or informed us of anything. We are completely in the dark," one apartment owner who lost family members told MFP.

Political Ties and Public Outrage

Public criticism has intensified following reports that the current military-appointed Chief Minister of Mandalay Region, U Myo Aung (a former municipal official), served as the Responsible Engineer during the construction of Sky Villa.

Despite his direct involvement in the building's oversight, U Myo Aung has remained silent regarding the collapse, leading to allegations of protectionism and a lack of transparency in the investigation.

Current Status

As of today, January 7, the owners of NTL Construction remain out of the public eye. When victims tried to contact the company, they were vaguely informed that a key person in charge was "temporarily ordained as a monk," an excuse many see as a tactic to avoid legal and social consequences.

The victims’ families continue to call for justice, insisting that the loss of over 200 lives cannot be settled with a one-time payment while those responsible evade the law.
